Night Hike
I was invited by a Kiwi friend to go on a night hike near Auckland. We were told it was "hard" but that is it. By hard they meant we literally ran down the "easy" part which was slippery rocks that were so big I had to jump down and the hard part was hiking up a river. There was no path for most of it, just a hike up a river in a gorge. We had to jump from boulder to boulder, wade through the river, swim through the river, climb up cliff ledges to get around water falls. It was really cool, but unfortunately I also got hurt. I fell from one boulder onto another, breaking my fall with my hand and shins. I do not know why I thought it was a good idea for an accident prone girl like me to go on a night hike. I sprained my left wrist, scraped my left shin a lot, and cut my right shin TO THE BONE. Seriously, it was a bullet wound to the bone. And lucky me I did this in the beginning of the hard part! I got to swim one handed, and climb cliffs one handed! I just wanted an extra challenge. Well despite the injury, was a very cool hike. I look froward to doing it IN THE LIGHT OF DAY, and do not plan any night hikes ever again. I did not make it to the ER fast enough to get stitches, so I had to get my bandages changed every day by the doctor. My leg still got infected, and I had to cancel my trip to Tonga, because that is the worse place for an infected leg to go. It bled for 3 days, and it did not close up until a MONTH later. Ugh. thank god for waterproof bandages. I will now have a permanent souvenir from New Zealand. Now I would like to conclude this story with I had a really good time and I am really really stupid.
